Chaplains’ Activity Discussed at the Metropolitan Church of Moldova

CHISINAU, February 24, 2012 — The chaplains’ activity and other related issues were discussed Friday, February 24, during a round table held at the Metropolitan Church of Moldova. The guests of the event were: Defense Minister Vitalie Marinuta, and the representative of the Ministry of Justice, director general of the Penitentiary Institutions Department, Col. Veaceslav Ceban.

H.E. Vladimir, Metropolitan of Chisinau and All Moldova, stated that, due to the Agreement concluded by the Metropolitan Church and the Ministry of Defense, a lot of good things were achieved. “We are very grateful to the Ministry of Defense for the support in arranging the chapels, prayer rooms, where National Army servicemen had the opportunity to discuss on religious topics and get the chaplains’ blessing. This is a good beginning and we truly believe this cooperation would keep developing”, the Metropolitan stated.

“The moral-spiritual education is an obligation of both, state and family, and religion. Therefore, the project implemented within the army is quite welcome and useful”, Vitalie Marinuta said. The Defense Minister thanked the chaplains for their fruitful activity within military units.
The discussions focused on the moral-spiritual support provided by the chaplains in the National Army. Then, the participants made a review of the publication of a prayer book for soldiers and the draft law on the establishment of the military clergy.

According to Col. Eduard Ohladciuc, Chief of Personnel Directorate of National Army Main Staff, in 2011, chaplains organized a wide variety of meetings with the conscripts, focusing mainly on meetings with conscripts at risk. They also arranged a few places for praying and organized visits to monasteries and other sacred places for the military staff. Thus, the chaplains were awarded the Chaplain Insignia recently established by the Metropolitan Church of Moldova.

Remark: The National Army and the Metropolitan Church of Moldova cooperate within a joint action program started in 1997. As a result of this project, on September 3, 2011, the Ministry of Defense became the first Government institution to get Stefan cel Mare Church Order, 1st class.
