European Vice-Champion Oleg Sirghi Gets Promoted



CHISINAU, April 17, 2012 — Defense Minister Vitalie Marinuta promoted today, April 17, warrant officer Oleg Sirghi, winner of the silver medal at the European Weightlifting Championship in Turkey, to the rank of Lieutenant.

During the meeting, Minister Vitalie Marinuta appreciated the performances of the Moldovan sportsmen at the European championships. Marinuta specified, “The Ministry of Defense has always supported and will keep supporting the performance sports. We are proud to know that a National Army representative won the silver medal at the European Championship. Today’s meeting is meant to encourage the military sportsman Oleg Sirghi to get very good results at the following world competitions. I would also like to thank coaches that trained such a champion of the National Army”.

The European vice champion Oleg Sirghi, serviceman of the National Army Guard Battalion, stated he was ready both morally and physically for the next stage of the competition. He assured he would do his best at the 2012 Olympic Games in order to get high performance, thus promoting a positive image of both the National Army and his country.

The President of the Moldovan Weightlifting Federation, Tudor Casapu, ex-Olympic champion, believes the young generation of Moldovan sportsmen will get good results at the 2012 Olympic Games from London, Great Britain, due to hard training and ambition.

Oleg Sirghi has also won a silver medal at the weight throw category (146 kg = 321 pounds) and a bronze medal at weight pulling (116 kg = 255 pounds).

In 2011, Oleg Sirghi won the golden medal in the 56 kg category at the European Weightlifting Championship held in Kazan, Russia.
