Moldovan-Romanian Military Cooperation



CHISINAU, April 20, 2012 — “The conclusion of the new defense cooperation agreement shall contribute to the development of a special relationship between our armies based on European-type partnership”, Minister of National Defense of Romania, Gabriel Oprea, stated Friday, April 20, after the conclusion of the Republic of Moldova and Romanian Governments’ Military Cooperation Agreement within his official visit to Chisinau at the invitation of the Moldovan counterpart, Vitalie Marinuta.

During the work meetings, the defense ministers discussed issues of bilateral cooperation, joint training military staff from both countries, as well as defense reforms. The Moldovan Minister of Defense stated there are currently new opportunity to enhance bilateral cooperation and promote mutually profitable relations between the National Army and the Romanian Army. “I think that, after conclusion of the updated Military Cooperation Agreement, we opened a new page in the mutual cooperation of the Republic of Moldova and Romanian armies that would definitely insure the successful cooperation of our states in the defense and security areas. They will be also useful in the international community projects as regard to the establishment of an efficient security system in our region, as well as at the international level”, Vitalie Marinuta stated.

Minister Marinuta thanked and pointed out the Romanian Army’s support in the National Army staff training in Romanian military educational institutions.

During the media briefing, Minister Gabriel Oprea stated, “The Romanian party will keep assisting the reform of the Moldovan army and the military education system. As for the NATO-based relationship, we have discussed about the fact the Partnership for Peace Program provides the ground for the joint effort in term of the establishment of a secure and stable environment through political dialogue and cooperation, as well as for the promotion of internal reforms and modernization of the armed forces. I am sure the military relations between Romania and Republic of Moldova will keep developing, focusing on mutual trust, solidarity and joint interest. I assure you will always have devoted and honest partners on the bank of the Prut River, which you always can count on in your European and Euro Atlantic goals.”

During the visit to the Republic of Moldova, Minster Gabriel Oprea and the members of the Romanian delegation had meetings with Republic of Moldova President, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Nicolae Timofti, and Prime Minister Vlad Filat.

The officials also laid flowers to Stefan cel Mare Monument from Chisinau and the Romanian Heroes’ Cemetery from Calarasi.

The Military Cooperation Agreement signed between the Romanian Government and the Republic of Moldova Government sets the legal frame of the military cooperation of the two countries, the establishment of a Mixed Military Committee, the organization and carrying out of joint exercises and training, protection of information, financial aspects and personnel judicial status.
