Core Problems Unsolved by JCC

CHISINAU, May 5, 2012 — At the regular meeting as of May 3, the Joint Control Commission examined a series of issues related to the situation in the Security Area and the peacekeeping operations activity. The analysis of the Joint Military Command report and the way the investigation about the January 1 incident with joint peacekeeping checkpoint no.9 on the left bank of the Dniester River raised a conflict during the meeting of the commission. Since the parties could not agree, they decided to postpone the examination of the issues for the following JCC sessions.

Another important subject dealt with the attempts of the Transnistrian authorities to recover the infrastructure elements at Peacekeepers’ checkpoint No.9, installed without JCC’s approval as of January 13. According to most of the participants in the peacekeeping operations, this decision allowed the improvement of the situation at the peacekeepers’ checkpoint. The JCC decision as of January 13 states that the parties should keep back from carrying out unilateral actions that would change the situation of the joint peacekeepers’ checkpoint. However, at the last meeting, the representatives of the Transnistrian region within JCC insisted on recovering the infrastructure of checkpoint No.9.

Thus, the Republic of Moldova JCC delegation focused everyone’s attention on the peacekeeping process and mainly of the Transnistrian delegation’s attention on the fact JCC’s decisions cannot be ignored and the situation destabilization process should not be facilitated in the central part of the Security Area.
