Marinuta - Harrington-Buhay Meeting

Chisinau, April 23, 2013 — Acting Defense Minister Vitalie Marinuta met with Nicola Harrington-Buhay, United Nations Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Resident Representative in the Republic of Moldova.

The officials discussed about the current cooperation between the UN Office and our country, focusing on world peacekeeping and security building issues. “Republic of Moldova’s participation in UN-led peacekeeping missions proves the state’s commitment to promoting stability and security in the world, which is also one of the goals of the National Army”, Vitalie Marinuta said.

Minister of Defense pointed out that the defense institution intends to enhance participation of our country in such missions. Moldovan servicemembers have proven that they have all the necessary capabilities and readiness during the UN-led peacekeeping in Sudan, Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire since 2003.

In her turn, Nicola Harrington-Buhay appreciated Moldovan peacekeepers’ professionalism shown throughout 10 years of involvement in peace building missions. “For such small countries like Republic of Moldova participation in these missions is a great opportunity to actively contribute to peace consolidation in countries affected by wars”, Nicola Harrington-Buhay stated.

In 2013 we will celebrate 10 years of National Army servicemembers’ participation in UN-led missions. Thus, on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, May 29, the Ministry of Defense will organize events aimed at informing the society about our country’s contribution to peacekeeping and stabilization missions.
