Vitalie Marinuta Holds Press Conference

CHISINAU, July 9, 2013 — The sales of weapons, participation of foreign contingents in military exercises conducted in Republic of Moldova and statements on the Transnistrian conflict were the main issues covered in the press conference conducted today by Minister of Defense, Vitalie Marinuta.

Referring to the sales of weapons, actively discussed by some political forces, Defense Minister stated that the transaction was perfectly legal, in compliance with the legislation of Republic of Moldova, as well as the international laws. This was demonstrated by the General Prosecutor’s Office at the end of the investigation. “The actions made by the Ministry of Defense, that tried to obtain some additional financial sources, necessary for the National Army, as well as for the economical development of the country, were based on the legislation in effect. Therefore, as soon as the investigation was over, the criminal dossier on illegal sales of weapons was closed because of the lack of elements of an infringement. Thus, experts declared the transaction as legal”, the Minister of Defense said.

As for the statements on the Transnistrian conflict, the Defense Minister said that they were incorrectly interpreted. “In the interview, I said my opinion about the situation in this area, as a citizen of this country and as a leader of a defense institution. I pointed out that citizens should trust the National Army. They should also be aware that there are no premises for a military conflict in the Dniester region, although the situation is quite tensioned. I am confident that there are no conditions for a military conflict. We must have a diplomatic view about this problem, carry out 5+2 format discussions, accept the support of the international community in this area”, Vitalie Marinuta said.

During the press conference, the Defense Minister also referred to the participation of an infantry platoon of the Romanian Army in the bilateral exercise “Peace Shield 2013”. Marinuta said that such events are held in term of development of international cooperation relations. “The participation of a Romanian platoon of 25 soldiers, without weapons and technical equipment, as part of an infantry company of the National Army is a bilateral activity included in the 2013 Foreign Action Plan of the Ministry of Defense, approved at the end of the last year”, the Minister of Defense mentioned.

Thus, Vitalie Marinuta pointed out that National Army soldiers often attend bilateral exercises both, inside and outside the country. The Minister gave the example of the Moldovan-Ukrainian exercise “Nord”, held at the Training Center of Brigade “Moldova” in Balti, the Moldovan and US Special Forces exercise held in Balti, as well as the participation of our soldiers in multinational exercises in Germany.

The Minister of Defense specified that foreign military contingents participate at exercises on the territory of Republic of Moldova based on the Law on the status of foreign military forces in Republic of Moldova No. 448 as of November 13, 2003. “Article 5, paragraph 8, of the above law states that “Ten days before the arrival of foreign military forces, the Ministry of Defense provides all the necessary information to the central and local public authorities engaged in this activity”, Vitalie Marinuta said.

At the end of the press conference, the Minister of Defense answered the journalists’ questions.
