War Veterans Social Care Discussed at the Ministry of Defense

CHISINAU, August 21, 2013 — The Chief of National Army Main Staff, National Army Commander, Brigadier Gen. Vitalie Stoian, met today with the Head of the Office for War Veterans and Victims of Oppression from Poland, Jan Stanislaw Chiechanowski, who will be staying in Republic of Moldova during August 19-23.

The talks focused on the social care of war veterans and Moldovan-polish cooperation in the above area.

Brigadier Gen. Vitalie Stoian said that the Ministry of Defense pays much attention to the veterans, trying to invite them to different military and commemoration events. “Our veterans deserve all our appreciation for their heroic deeds in wars. Therefore, veterans attend actions of conscripts’ and active-duty servicemembers’ patriotic education, as well as different actions of commemoration of military events. The Ministry of Defense also takes care of the cemeteries and graves of foreign soldiers buried on the territory of the Republic of Moldova”, National Army Commander specified.

Brigadier Gen. Vitalie Stoian also pointed out the Defense Ministry’s commitment to maintaining a data base of participants in wars and the Main Staff’s contribution to solving veterans’ problems, through the National Council on War Participants’ problems, founded in 2006 under the Government of Republic of Moldova.

Jan Stanislaw Chiechanowski stated that, , war veterans’ destiny is a priority for the Polish Government, and his visit to Republic of Moldova reveals the interest for the Polish authorities’ cooperation with the Moldovan ones in this area. “Social care system of war veterans in our country is similar to the Moldovan one. The Polish Government spends huge sums of money on making their life decent and involving them in public events. I believe that, due to the cooperation between war veterans’ organizations from Republic of Moldova and Poland, we will be able to build a good future for both, Moldovan and Polish veterans, living in your country”, the official said.

Our country currently has 2,724 veterans of World War II and 25,793 participants in wars for the independence of Republic of Moldova.

According to statistics provided by the Embassy of Poland, there are six Polish veterans living in Republic of Moldova.

Moldovan-Polish bilateral defense relations are based on the Agreement signed between the Moldovan and Polish Ministries of Defense, on October 27, 1998, in Warsaw.
