National Army Servicemembers Remember Afghan Victims
Chisinau, February 15, 2014 — National Army Servicemembers attended the 25th anniversary ceremony since the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan, that took place throughout the country.
Thus, Defense Minister, Vitalie Marinuta, along with the servicemembers from Chisinau garrison, officials, veterans and their family members, attended the solemn meeting held at “Feciorilor Patriei — sfinta amintire” Memorial from Riscani district of the capital city. They laid flowers and kept a moment of silence to remember fallen soldiers.
At the same time, the National Army servicemembers from other garrisons of the country attended the commemoration ceremonies held in Balti, Cahul, Edinet, Floresti, Ungheni, Nisporeni and Hincesti.
The official data show that about 12, 500 Moldovan citizens participated in the 1979 — 1989 Afghan War. 301 of them were killed, four were declared missing and 257 were injured.
