Moldovan- American Defense Cooperation Discussed at the Ministry of Defense



Chisinau, June 20, 2014 — Defense Minister, Valeriu Troenco, met today with Evelyn Farcas, United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, and Gregory M. Kausner, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Regional Security and Security Assistance. The event was also attended by the Chief of Main Staff, National Army Commander, Col. Igor Gorgan.

The agenda included aspects of the Moldovan-American defense cooperation, focusing on the identification of some perspectives to enhance the bilateral relations between the two armies.

Valeriu Troenco appreciated the US support in the development and reform of the defense security sector of the Republic of Moldova, as well as in the implementation of some assistance projects of major importance in training, combat readiness, logistics and medical area.

The Ministry of Defense pointed out the importance of our country, including the National Army’s participation at the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI), specifying that this program contributed significantly to the National Army’s modernization through logistics support, Moldovan Army infrastructure renovation, as well as the servicemembers‘ training for peacekeeping missions, in compliance with the international standards.

Evelyn Farkas stated Republic of Moldova has always been a reliable partner, due to the commitment and determination of National Army soldiers in carring out their missions, despite an austere budget.

The American official expressed her country’s availability and interest to support the efforts of the National Army in the professional development of the staff, logistics supply of Moldovan military units and the training institutions of the National Army.

Gregory M. Kausner supported the idea to identify some priorities to extend the cooperation between the US Department of State and the National Army, in term of defense reform.

The Moldovan-American defense cooperation is based on the Memorandum “Regarding the cooperation in the military area” signed by the Ministry of Defense of Republic of Moldova and the US Department of Defense, on December 4, 1995.
