Military EOD Engineers Destroy Over 1,000 Explosive Objects in 2014



CHISINAU, January 16, 2015 — Last year, the National Army EOD engineers identified and disposed of 1135 explosive objects in different districts of the country.

According to LTC Serghei Chilivnic, specialist, EOD Division of the National Army, in 2014, the teams of the EOD Battalion, “Moldova”, “Stefan cel Mare”, and “Dacia” Brigades were called in the districts of Stefan Voda, Causeni, Ungheni, Criuleni, Cantemir, Anenii Noi, Hincesti, and Telenesti.

The source specified that the largest amount of ammunition was discovered in March, in Plop Stiubei village, Causeni district, where the engineers of the EOD Battalion, commanded by Cpt. Adrian Cirlig, disposed of 37 mine launcher bombs of 82 mm caliber, dating back to World War II.

LTC Chilivnic added that another batch of ammunition was destroyed in the forest near Mingir village, Hincesti district, in April. The EOD engineers, commanded by Cpt. Alexandru Muntean, identified 24 bomb launcher bombs of 81 mm caliber, three anti-tank and anti-personnel mines, 4 grenade launcher grenades, an artillery projectile of 100 mm caliber, one F-1 hand-grenade, and two anti-personnel and anti-tank grenades. All the explosives dated back to World War II.

In the autumn of the same year, the EOD team of “Moldova” Brigade intervened in Balti city in order to destroy 30 explosive objects. The ammunition was discovered by a group of workers in the courtyard of a warehouse near Balti-Slobozia Railway station. The military EOD engineers identified seven artillery projectiles of 77 mm caliber, 14 anti-air projectiles of 57 mm caliber, five 82 mm bomb launcher bombs, and four F-1 grenades.

In September last year, besides participating in demining missions throughout the country, the National Army EOD engineers participated in the demolition by explosion of the funicular in Rezina town.
