Ministry of Defense deeply sorry for accident in Cosnita



CHISINAU, March 17, 2011 - A soldier of the National Army was shot Sunday, March 20, by a fellow soldier with a gun, the National Army Commander, Brigadier Gen. Iurie Dominic, stated during a press briefing held today.

The accident took place in the National Army 3rd Infantry Battalion of the Joint Peacekeeping Forces from Cosnita village, Dubasari.

The 19-year-old dead soldier’s name is Cornel Gorodisteanu. His parents, Vasile and Claudia Gorodisteanu are from Horodiste village, Riscani.

The preliminary investigation shows that, on Sunday, March 20, at 5 p.m., a conscript from Batalion 3 took over the responsibilities of sentinel. He was given an AK – 74 rifle gun and two loaders full of 30 5,45 mm bullets each. While in the smoking room, he loaded the gun. At that moment, soldier Cornel Gorodisteanu approached. The latter put a pen inside the gun barrel. The soldier who had the gun in his hand forgot the gun was loaded and shot his fellow soldier in the head.

An ambulance was called at 5:15 p.m. At 5:25 p.m., emergency doctors arrived at the very place. At 5:40 p.m., they concluded Cornel Gorodisteanu was dead. At 6 p.m., the victim’s body was taken to the Central Military Hospital from Chisinau. Military doctors concluded Cornel Gorodisteanu had 3rd degree hemorrhage.

The casualty is currently under investigation. The soldier who shot his fellow is kept under arrest by the Military Command. Thus, Chisinau Military Prosecution opened a criminal investigation based on art. 373, paragraph 2, letter „b” of Republic of Moldova Criminal Code “Violation of the Gun-Handling Safety Rules causing the death of a person”. Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta ordered the opening of a non-judicial investigation to reveal casualty circumstances.

The Ministry of Defense is deeply sorry for the tragic accident. It sympathizes with the family members of the dead soldier Cornel Gorodisteanu. This is a great loss for the victim’s family and the Ministry of Defense will do its best to support them in such hard moments.

Soldier Cornel Gorodisteanu joined Moldova Brigade from Balti in June 2010.
