Servicemembers of the 22nd Peacekeeping Battalion and the Military Command Celebrate Unit’s Day



CHISINAU, May 16, 2015 — The 22nd Peacekeeping Battalion marked today 16th anniversary within a ceremony held at the Military Compound 142. During the event, a group of servicemembers were awarded National Army medals.

At the ceremony, Minister of Defense, Viorel Cibotaru, congratulated the unit staff, mentioning their important contribution to peacekeeping and stability in our country and abroad. “The servicemembers of the 22nd Battalion were the first to participate as military observers within UN missions, placing the Republic of Moldova among international peace and security contributors. Also, since 2014, our country deployed peacekeeping contingents to the KFOR mission in Kosovo”, stated the Minister of Defense.

Chief of Main Staff, National Army Commander, Brigadier Gen. Igor Gorgan, appreciated the soldier’s professionalism during international missions in the Ivory Coast, South Sudan, Liberia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the post-conflict rehabilitation operation in Iraq, as well as within the Peacekeeping mixed forces in the eastern districts of the Republic of Moldova.

The event’s agenda included weapon handling exercises, wrestling procedures, climbing exercises, and advanced shooting techniques, as well as exhibitions of vehicles, weapons and equipment of the 22nd Peacekeeping Battalion.

Also today, the National Army Military Command marked its 23rd anniversary.
