Chief of the Romanian General Staff Pays Official Visit to Republic of Moldova



CHISINAU, July 21, 2015 — Chief of the Romanian Army General Staff, LTG Nicolae-Ionel Ciuca, pays an official visit to the National Army, within July 21-22.

During a meeting with Minister of Defense, Viorel Cibotaru, at the Ministry of Defense HQ, the Romanian official mentioned the progressive defense dialogue between Republic of Moldova and Romania. LTG Ciuca reiterated the readiness of Romania to continue the implementation of joint projects, and to participate together with Moldovan servicemembers at multinational and bilateral exercises.

The officials also discussed about the reformation process of the National Army and Romania’s contribution to the adjustment of our country’s defense system to western standards.

During the meeting, Minister Cibotaru mentioned the endorsement of the assistance package “Defense Capacity Building for Republic of Moldova” at the end of June in Brussels, and thanked Romania for the support.

Also today, LTG Ciuca met with Chief of Main Staff, National Army Commander, Brigadier Gen. Igor Gorgan and the leadership of the National Army. They discussed about the exercises planned for 2015, and the intention to continue conducting them the next year. In this context, Brigadier General Gorgan spoke about the multinational exercise “Joint Effort 2015” that currently takes place in Balti. A group of servicemembers from the 151st Infantry Battalion “Razboieni” of the Romanian Army also participates at this exercise.

The chiefs of the two staffs also discussed about the initiative of establishing a joint peacekeeping battalion, consisting of servicemembers from Republic of Moldova, Romania, and other countries. The idea was launched by Minister Viorel Cibotaru during his official visit to Bucharest in May, 2015.

While in Republic of Moldova, the Romanian delegation will visit “Stefan cel Mare” Brigade, as well as the Military Training Center of “Moldova” Brigade to observe the training within the “Joint Effort 2015” exercise.

The Moldovan-Romanian military cooperation started in December 1992.
