Minister Anatol Salaru Meets the UK Defense Attaché in Chisinau



CHISINAU, September 2, 2015 — Minister of Defense, Anatol Salaru, met with the new UK Defense Attaché, LTC Tim Bakewell, and the Deputy Head of the British Embassy in Moldova, Neil Martin. Chief of National Army Main Staff, Brigadier Gen. Igor Gorgan, and State Secretary, Aurel Fondos, also attended the meeting.

The main subjects discussed were the enforcement of the military cooperation between the two countries, the National Army reformation with a potential UK support, and other current topics on the joint agenda.

Minister of Defense, Anatol Salaru, expressed his gratitude for the interest shown towards the Republic of Moldova and especially towards the National Army development. The official reiterated the importance of cooperation by providing military training opportunities to Moldovan servicemembers in educational institutions in UK. Anatol Salaru pointed out how important it is for the National Army to participate in international military exercises and peacekeeping missions.

Considering the necessity of the National Army modernization on both legislative and operative levels, Anatol Salaru requested the support of the UK Ministry of Defense in the development of reforms that would lead to the alignment of the National Army to Euro-Atlantic standards.

The UK Defense Attaché, Tim Bakewell, said that he wishes for a productive cooperation during the next two years of his mandate. The official underlined the progress reached by Romania in the last year and expressed his hope Moldova would keep participating with troops in military exercises.

Also, LTC Bakewell mentioned the geopolitical importance of the Eastern Europe in the context of the Ukrainian crisis.
