More Pesticides Evacuated from the South of Moldova



CHISINAU, December 9, 2016 — National Army service members evacuated today 125,499 tons of pesticide waste stocked in the district central warehouse from Bugeac village, Comrat district.

According to Col. Mariana Grama, deputy head of Logistics Directorate of the General Staff, the pesticides were collected from the villages of Comrat district and Baurci village, Ciadir-Lunga district, during November 3-December 9, 2016.

The works were carried out by the service members from the 22nd Peacekeeping Battalion and “Stefan cel Mare” Brigade who were supervised by the representatives of E.S. Field Services Veolia company from Great Britain and supported by the local public authorities from Gagauzia.

The source specified that the pesticides were exported to Poland in order to be destroyed at SARPI Dabrowa Gornicza incinerator.

Col. Mariana Grama mentioned that, next year, the service members will evacuate about 320 tons of pesticides from three central warehouses from Ciadir-Lunga, Ungheni, Singerei, Drochia districts, and Balti city.

These actions are part of the NATO Trust Fund Project on the disposal of dangerous pesticides and chemicals in the Republic of Moldova, implemented with the financial support of Romania, Republic of Moldova, Norway, Ireland, Italy, Turkey, Czech Republic, Finland, Estonia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Luxembourg, Japan, Poland, and Latvia.

So far, about 953 tons of pesticide waste from 11 central warehouses was prepared for export, transported, and destroyed as part of this project. The pesticides were from Anenii Noi, Basarabeasca, Ialoveni, Cahul, Calarasi, Donduseni, Glodeni, Leova, Soroca, Falesti, Taraclia, and Comrat districts.
