Demining Missions Carried Out by Military Engineers in 2016



CHISINAU, January 3, 2017 — The National Army engineers found and disposed of 679 explosive objects throughout the country, in 2016.

According to LTC Serghei Chilivnic, head of Engineer Service of the Land Force Command, in 2016, the engineer teams consisting of service members from the Engineer Battalion, “Moldova”, “Stefan cel Mare”, and “Dacia” Brigades carried out 183 demining operations in villages from Stefan Voda, Causeni, Cantemir, Soroca, Orhei, and Anenii Noi districts, .

LTC Chilivnic specified that, in September, 69 artillery projectiles of 100 mm caliber were found in the forest of Hirbovat village, Anenii Noi district. The explosive objects were destroyed by the demining team of the Engineer Battalion, commanded by Capt. Valentin Stati.

The Head of Engineer Service added that another amount of explosives was found in Plopi village, Cantemir district, in December, during field works. Within this operation, the engineer team of “Dacia” Brigade, commanded by Sergeant Major Vasile Caminschi, neutralized 18 submunitions of 37 mm caliber.

In July, the engineers of “Moldova” Brigade found and disposed of 233 bullets of 7.62 mm caliber, in Solcani village, Soroca district.

All the explosives found in 2016 dated back to World War II and were destroyed by National Army engineers under maximum security conditions.
