Republic of Moldova and Lithuania – Strategic Defense Partnership (video)



CHISINAU, May 18, 2018 — Lithuania has always supported Moldova with concrete actions aimed to develop, modernize, and reform the defense system of our country. The statement was made by Minister of Defense Eugen Sturza at the meeting with his Lithuanian counterpart Raimundas Karoblis in Vilnius. Talks on defense were also conducted between State Secretary for defense policy and international cooperation Dumitru Minzarari and his Lithuanian counterpart Vytautas Umbrasas.

The Minister of Defense thanked the Lithuanian Government for the significant assistance offered to the National Army of the Republic of Moldova in important fields, such as military education, expertise in developing strategic documents, and joint training within multinational exercises organized in Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, and other countries.

Eugen Sturza mentioned that Lithuania is an example for Moldova concerning the defense system and said that our country is relying on the Lithuanian partners’ experience, especially now, when the National Army is undergoing a vast reformation and professionalization process.

The Lithuanian Minister of Defense confirmed the availability to continue the already imposing bilateral cooperation plan, but reiterated also that Lithuania is open to discuss and implement new defense projects with the Republic of Moldova. Raimundas Karoblis highlighted Lithuania’s interest in promoting the joint projects within the Eastern Partnership through the trust funds of the North Atlantic Alliance, in order to advance support for the consolidation of the National Army of the Republic of Moldova.

The two officials also talked about the regional security and the measures for counteracting hybrid warfare. The Ministers agreed on continuing the dialogue relative to these important subjects between the specialists of the two ministries.

While in Lithuania, Minister Sturza met also with Vice-minister of Foreign Affairs, Darius Skusevicius, Chair of the National Security and Defense Committee of the Lithuanian Parliament, Vytautas Bakas, and visited the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence from Vilnius.

The Minister of Defense paid a visit to Lithuania within May 18-19, 2018.
