National Army Sends a New Peacekeeping Contingent to Kosovo



CHISINAU, June 8, 2018 — The deployment ceremony of the National Army contingent to KFOR peacekeeping operation in Kosovo was held today at the Ministry of Defense. The event was attended by ambassadors, defense attaches, and peacekeepers’ relatives.

Chief of Defense Staff of Italy, General Claudio Graziano, who is paying a visit to our country for the first time, stated that Italy welcomes the current Moldovan contribution to peace stabilization in the Balkans, within the KFOR Italian-led Multinational Battle Group — West.

“The hard and successful work in KFOR will strengthen the image and the international standing of Moldova, opening the way to new possible common missions”, said Gen. Graziano.

Minister of Defense Eugen Sturza thanked the Italian and American partners for the ensuring the training, deployment, and logistics for the Moldovan service members in the theatre of operations.

The Minister of Defense expressed his conviction that the 41 peacekeepers will fulfill their mission with honor and dedication, as they have done at home and during external operations — in UN, EU, OSCE, and NATO missions.

“I believe that you will be able to be good ambassadors of our country in Kosovo and will make us proud of your performance”, said Eugen Sturza.

The ninth National Army contingent, that will leave for Kosovo on Saturday, June 9, consists of 41 service members, out of which one staff officer, 7 engineers, and a platoon of 33 soldiers that will carry out security, guard and patrol missions.

The Moldovan service members will be stationed in Camp Villaggio Italia in Pech village, Kosovo. Their mission in Kosovo will last six months.
