Commemorative Cross for Afghanistan War Veterans


CHISINAU, November 14, 2018 — The Cabinet approved the draft on establishing the Commemorative Cross “Participant in Combat Actions in Afghanistan (1979-1989)”. The document has been presented today by General State Secretary, Radu Burduja, during the Cabinet’s session.

According to the paper, the Cross will be awarded on the occasion of the 30th anniversary since the withdrawal of the Limited Contingent of Soviet Troops from Afghanistan and to encourage the war veterans — participants in combat actions in Afghanistan (1979-1989).

The Cross will be awarded to 8500 participants to Afghanistan war holding the title of veteran according to the provisions of art. 7 par. (2) pt. 1) lett. f) of Law No. 190/2003 on Veterans. The Government will allocate 2.5 million Lei from the State budget to make the commemorative crosses, the identification cards, the ribbon bars, and the fabric-lined boxes.

The draft on establishing the Commemorative Cross “Participant in Combat Actions in Afghanistan (1979-1989)” has been developed based on Government’s Provision No. 126-d as of October 24, 2018 in the framework of marking the Commemoration Day of those who died during the war in Afghanistan (February 15).

Also today, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the decision on install a commemorative plaque dedicated to the soldiers who died in combat actions in Afghanistan on Victoriei blvd in Cahul city. According to the Government’s decision, the costs for designing, creating, installing, and inaugurating the plaque are to be covered by the Cahul-based Union of Afghanistan War Veterans.
