Minister of Defense Pays Official Visit to the Russian FederationCHISINAU, July 26, 2019 — Minister of Defense Pavel Voicu met today with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu in Moscow. The two Ministers talked about the regional situation and the reformation of the defense sector in the Republic of Moldova. In this regard, Minister Voicu informed the Russian official about the main activities undertaken by the new leadership of the Ministry of Defense in the framework of the National Army’s reformation process, such as: implementing the “Professional Army” program, increasing National Army’s participation in peacekeeping operations and international exercises, and boosting cooperation with foreign organizations and the defense institution’s partners. The officials also talked about the Moldovan-Russian cooperation, with a focus on commemorating the victims of World War II, restoring the soldiers’ monuments and graves, and ensuring functionality of the Peacekeeping Forces’ Joint Military Contingent in the Security Zone which includes military units of both the Republic of Moldova and Russian Federation. The Ministers also reviewed the situation in the Eastern part of Moldova and at the ammunition depots in Colbasna which represent an imminent danger for the people living in the region. In this regard, the two officials expressed their visions about the peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict and identifying possible solutions for mitigating explosion risks at Colbasna. At the end of the meeting, Pavel Voicu said that it is necessary to relaunch the dialogue between the Ministries of Defense of the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation in order to have a good cooperation in the areas that have been discussed.
