Military of the National Army, repatriated from Mali with the support of the Romanian authorities

CHISINAU, April 17, 2020 — A National Army military on a mission of the European Union for military training and counseling for the defense and security forces in Mali has been repatriated to the Republic of Moldova.

According to the head of the Strategic Planning Department of the General Staff, Colonel Sergiu Vicol, the return home of the Moldovan officer was possible due to the intervention of relevant institutions, the Romanian military attaché in our country, Colonel Cristi Ladaniuc, but also the support offered by our colleagues in Romania they ensured its transportation together with the Romanian military from the UN Integrated Multidimensional Stabilization Mission in the Republic of Mali (MINUSMA), with a special air flight, operated by the Romanian company TAROM.

The source specified that the transit on the Romanian territory and the transfer of the military to the Albita Border Control and Crossing Point were ensured with the help of colleagues from the Romanian Ministry of National Defense.

Colonel Vicol added that the soldier went on a mission in December, where he trained artillerymen from the Mali army. He was repatriated as a result of a reduction in the number of personnel by the leadership of the EU mission in Mali in the context of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 virus. The Moldovan officer is feeling well and will be in self-isolation in accordance with the requirements of the Emergency Situations Commission.

The leadership of the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff of the National Army thanked the Romanian partners for their contribution and support to the repatriation of the military, noting that in these difficult times it is very important effective communication and close cooperation to protect our citizens in the epidemiological situation world.

It should be noted that the soldiers of the National Army participate in the European Union Mission of military training and counseling for the defense and security forces in Mali since 2018. Their term usually lasts six months, some being responsible for providing medical care and others for training of representatives of defense and security structures in the field of artillery.
