The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Moldova and the Ministry of Defense of the Italian Republic have signed the Technical Agreement on cooperation within the UNIFIL operation in Lebanon

CHISINAU, July 8, 2022 - The Technical Agreement between the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Moldova and the Ministry of Defense of the Italian Republic on cooperation in Operation UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) was signed today by Colonel Anatolie Zavtur of the General Staff National and the defense attaché of the Italian Republic, Colonel Ivano Antonio Romano.

The document sets out the principles and conditions for the participation of the National Army contingent in the UNIFIL operation.

The bilateral agreement also includes the responsibilities of the parties, as well as logistical and medical support, including in case of emergency medical evacuation, provision of communication and information systems, transportation of the contingent to/from the mission, and others. The document will enter into force on the date of application of the last signature.

It should be mentioned that the signing of the technical agreement received the green light from the Government during the meeting on June 15.

The National Army will participate in UNIFIL starting next month.

A decision in this regard was approved in November last year by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.

The contingent of the Republic of Moldova in this mission will benefit from multilateral support from the Italian contingent, which will include accommodation, food, medical care, transportation, communications, etc., and the Ministry of Defense will cover expenses related to payment of compensation, training the military, providing military equipment, some of which are subsequently reimbursed through a mechanism established by the United Nations.

The initiative to second the National Army in the Lebanese Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) supports the goal of increasing the contribution to peacekeeping by participating in international missions, provided for in the Government`s Program of Activity, but also in the context of the provisions of Law no. 219/2015 on the participation of the Republic of Moldova in international missions and operations.
