The major objective of the Ministry of Defense is the modernization of the National Army, in order to be able to fulfill its basic mission — that of defending the Republic of Moldova and ensuring the security of the country’s citizens.

In this sense, the defense institution is making every effort, including through negotiations with external partners, to identify optimal solutions regarding equipping the National Army with modern equipment to face the current security challenges.

In connection with the information appearing in the media regarding the European Union’s intention to allocate another 40 million euros for the army of the Republic of Moldova, the Ministry of Defense communicates the following:

Discussions and negotiations are currently underway regarding the possibility of the European Union granting, through the European Facility Instrument (EPF), an estimated aid equal to that allocated in 2022, which was in the amount of 40 million euros for the development of the defense capabilities of the Republic of Moldova.

The current discussions focus on the continuation of previously initiated projects, but also the launch of new projects that may include the purchase of radars to equip the subunits of the National Army responsible for the surveillance of our country’s airspace.

Once a final decision is made, the defense establishment will inform the public in due course and come up with more details regarding that assistance.

We note that previously, the EU approved financial aid for the years 2021 and 2022 in the amount of 47 million euros for the development of the defense capabilities of the Republic of Moldova. It involves assistance for the provision of medical and engineering subdivisions with modern equipment, but also for the strengthening of logistics, transport, communications and IT capacities and others.
