Defense Ministers of the Republic of Moldova and Romania, in dialogue in Chisinau (video)



CHISINAU, May 2, 2023 — The Minister of Defense Anatolie Nosatîi had, today, a meeting with the Minister of National Defense of Romania, Angel Tîlvăr, who is on an official visit to Chisinau.

The main topics on the discussion agenda concerned the state of cooperation between the two defense institutions, the support provided by Romania in the context of the development of the defense capabilities of the Republic of Moldova and the prospects for strengthening the partnership.

The officials also referred to the regional security situation, related challenges and crises, including those related to hybrid threats and the widespread phenomenon of disinformation, as well as the summit of the European Political Community that the Republic of Moldova is going to host in June 1, current.

Following the bilateral talks, the two ministers held press statements.

Within them, Anatolie Nosatîi mentioned that Romania was and is a strategic partner of the Republic of Moldova, and this was felt recently.

“The development of defense capabilities and the transformation of the National Army into a modern institution, capable of providing security to the citizens of our country, is one of the priorities of the Ministry of Defense. And the Government of Romania and the Ministry of National Defense offer us significant help in this regard, including through various forms of training, joint training, but also the expertise offered for the modernization of the national defense system. Here I would also like to mention Romania’s assistance in promoting some external projects aimed at strengthening the defense capabilities of the Republic of Moldova, such as the increased assistance package from the North Atlantic Alliance, but also those within the European Peace Facility (European Peace Facility — EPF)”, said Anatolie Nosatîi.

For his part, Minister Angel Tîlvăr highlighted the excellent level of collaborative relations between the two institutions, but also the openness of the specialists from the Ministry of National Defense to respond to requests for support from the Republic of Moldova.

“For us, the Republic of Moldova represents a strategic priority. It is very important to continue and strengthen cooperation in the field of joint, bilateral and multilateral training and military education. Why? Because every army needs people as well trained as possible and anchored in strategic realities. The results obtained together so far confirm this”, said Angel Tîlvăr.

The Romanian Minister of Defense reiterated that Romania firmly supports the European path of the Republic of Moldova and reconfirms the commitment to intensify cooperation on the level of security and defense, including in the context in which our country has become a candidate state for joining the European Union.

At the same time, the official mentioned that Romania is constantly advocating for increased EU support for increasing the resilience of the Republic of Moldova, developing defense capabilities and countering hybrid threats.

Also today, Angel Tîlvăr had meetings with the President of the Republic of Moldova, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Maia Sandu, the President of the Parliament, Igor Grosu and the Prime Minister Dorin Recean. On Wednesday, May 3, the Romanian delegation will pay a visit to the Motorized Infantry Brigade “Moldova” in the municipality of Bălți.

It should be noted that the Minister of National Defense of Romania, Angel Tîlvăr, is on an official visit to Chisinau during the period 2-3 May, at the invitation of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Moldova, Anatolie Nosatîi.
