The North Atlantic Alliance has approved an assistance package for strengthening the defense capabilities of the Republic of Moldova

CHISINAU, February 17, 2023 — The Republic of Moldova will benefit from an increased assistance package from the North Atlantic Alliance. The decision was approved during the meeting of defense ministers of the NATO member states, held in Brussels, and comes in response to the request of the Republic of Moldova in the context of strengthening our country’s defense capabilities in the context of the deterioration of the regional security environment.

The Allies approved the updated document on the NATO Assistance Package for strengthening the defense and security capabilities of the Republic of Moldova (DCB). It provides for increased cooperation to strengthen the resilience of national institutions to new challenges and combat hybrid threats, including the promotion of strategic communication and public diplomacy to combat disinformation.

The document also stipulates cooperation in the development of the defense and security capabilities of the Republic of Moldova, with an emphasis on the modernization of the armed forces, the strengthening of cyber defense, as well as the consolidation of institutional integrity and the professional development of civil servants in the security and national defense sector.

According to Secretary of State Valeriu Mija, the cooperation between the Ministry of Defense and the North Atlantic Alliance within the DCB Initiative started in 2015. “The implementation of the initial DCB assistance package included projects for the modernization of the National Army of the Republic of Moldova. At the Alliance summit in June 2022, in Madrid, the political decision to expand cooperation with the Republic of Moldova was approved, this being detailed in the updated DCB document approved within the North Atlantic Council in February 2023. This assistance, in the form of consultancy, training and capabilities, will contribute to the modernization of the defense and security sector of the Republic of Moldova, including increasing the national resilience and capacity to manage various crisis situations” said Valeriu Mija.
