The Government will accede to the Agreement on the SEDM Coordination Committee

CHISINAU, December 13, 2023 — The Government of the Republic of Moldova will accede to the Agreement on the Coordination Committee within the process of meetings of defense ministers from South-Eastern Europe (SEDM-CC), signed in Sofia on October 21, 2009. A decision, in this regard, was approved, today, by the cabinet of ministers.

“By joining this agreement and applying to become a member of the SEDM, we want to contribute, together with our external partners, to the strengthening of regional trust and security, as well as to the promotion of peace, stability and democratic values. Only by combining efforts, we will be able to overcome the challenges faced by our country, but also the international community in the current security context”, said the Minister of Defense, Anatolie Nosatîi.

The document is the latest international instrument, which regulates the activity of the SEDM Process.

According to him, the SEDM-CC is responsible for the coordination, administration, proposal, support, supervision and implementation of all activities and initiatives launched within the SEDM, but also the elaboration of the corresponding documents, which will be proposed for approval to the ministers who are part of this platform. Other details can be found here.

We mention that the initiative of the Ministry of Defense comes after the signing in Ankara this November of the accession document of the Republic of Moldova to the SEDM Process as a full member.

SEDM is a regional initiative that contributes to strengthening political-military collaboration relations and maintaining stability and security in Southeast Europe, by promoting regional cooperation and good neighborly relations, as well as strengthening regional defense capabilities.

The Republic of Moldova was accepted to participate in the meetings of the SEDM Process in 2003, with observer status. The member states of the initiative are: Albania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Georgia, Greece, Italy, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, United States of America, Turkey and Ukraine. The rotating presidency of the initiative and, implicitly, of the Coordination Committee, respectively of the Political-Military Steering Committee of the SEDM, will be exercised, in the period 2023-2025, by Romania.
